Over the semester I have been writing about many different aspects of tourism, both good and bad. For this post I am going to describe what I have learned from this experience. My professor outlined course goals near the beginning of the class to help guide our understanding. Below I will explain my comprehension of a few of these goals.
Goal 1:
Each student will be able to identify current/contemporary issues impacting the international travel industry, or shows how historical approaches are relevant to contemporary issues: Human Rights.
I am somewhat reluctant to admit how naïve I was before taking this course. I always thought tourism was a great and positive tool for many societies’. If done properly it can be great, but many of the practices of modern day tourism have extreme negative impacts on the environment, on people, and also on local economies. Many of my previous blog posts have looked directly at some of these issues. The subject I am going to continue to focus my attention on is the impact tourism has on people, specifically sex tourism victims.
I can honestly say that before undertaking this assignment I did not believe sex tourism was such a big industry. I have realized now that this is a huge industry and this industry drives the human trafficking market. When preparing the infographic in my previous post I was able to find many heart wrenching facts. The main fact though is that sex tourism is a huge problem and NEEDS to be stopped. Those partaking in this terrible industry need to be prosecuted in all countries. On an international level this industry is fully apart of every country. People are trafficked in and out of every country around the world. This is why it has to be a worldwide effort to make an impact.
Goal 2:
Each student will demonstrate the effective use of technology to improve their writing and speaking. Students will need to demonstrate how they have utilized the online resources to improve their writing skills, incorporate photographs from the Internet, information from electronic journals, and online experts to improve and broaden their perspectives as indicated by the quality of their written and oral communication, and multi-media presentations.
This course has been a huge eye opener into the vast resources the Internet has to offer. I was able to both find and spread information regarding sex tourism through multiple outlets. These include both my blog and probably even more effective was my pinterest account. I have realized through this that pictures can honestly speak louder than words. I was able to utilize pinterest to drive traffic to my blog. I learned over the semester what pictures and posts most influenced my readers. You can see the progression of my writing by scrolling through a few of my more recent blog posts.
I have been extremely touched by this topic and I feel my views are forever changed. I will continue to use my voice to help those who cant help themselves. I know that someday I will be able to make a difference and at some point my writing will help stop this injustice. Please continue to check back now and then to get updates on what is being done.
