Vacation Thailand
When planning a vacation to an unfamiliar place there are a few key items that need to be researched. Things like what areas are safe to stay in, places to avoid and also attractions you want to visit. I have focused thus far on the rough red light district of Thailand. This is the main location where women and children, which were trafficked into the country, are forced to work.
This post is for tourists who want to visit the beautiful side of Thailand. When visiting a place with such magnificent landscapes it is important to travel smart and find eco friendly attractions (ecotourism). These can include hotels, tours, hikes, and also travel accommodations. One eco-friendly organization I was able to find is Paddle Asia. Paddle Asia allows tourists to experience the beauty of Thailand, while also conserving the natural habitat. I believe they promote ecotourism in several ways.
1. The organization should provide first-hand participatory, and enlightening experiences (Wight, 1993)
2. It should promote moral and ethical responsibilities and behaviors towards the natural and cultural environment by all parties (Wight, 1993)
When looking for organizations it is important to do your research and make sure they practice what they are promoting. Many organizations will promote an eco friendly approach and not live up to any of the fundamentals. A few observations on why I believe Paddle Asia is a true eco organization.
None of their tours use up or harm the natural resources. The website lays out many of the activities the company offers, which include; mountain climbing, kayaking, Bike tours and other environmentally friendly activities. Their definition of ecotourism is, “touring with the utmost appreciation for the environment with the highest concern for its preservation”. They also discuss how they are different than other organizations. They give examples of other organizations which claim eco friendly principles, but truly take advantage the animals and the environment. You can see these at http://thaiwildorchids.com/environmental_concerns.htm.
While touring is fun, Paddle Asia also teaches classes to educate tourists on how to survive in the jungle. They hire native Thai people to give first hand experiences and pass on their knowledge to those who want to learn. Exploring opportunities like this can make your vacation both fulfilling and educational.
Paddle Asia looks like an awesome company that truly has the environment in mind. If you are planning a vacation to Thailand in the near future you can find them at http://thaiwildorchids.com/index.htm.
Have safe and eco friendly travels!
